References / Principal Environmental Standards

Appropriate standards for human health protection and preservation of the living environment have been adopted for air, water, soil, and noise pollution. They indicate the regulatory objectives for promoting pollution countermeasures, based on the Basic Environment Law and Law Concerning Special Measures against Dioxins.

■ Environment Standards for Air Pollution

Substance Environmental Conditions
Sulfur dioxide (SO2) One-hour mean value for a day should be 0.04 ppm or less, and one-hour value 0.1 ppm or less.
Carbon monoxide (CO) One-hour mean value for a day should be 10 ppm or less, and one-hour mean value for 8 hours 20 ppm or less.
Suspended particulate matter(SPM) One-hour mean value for a day should be 0.10 mg/m3 or less, and one-hour value 0.20 mg/m3 or less.
Dioxins Annual average: 0.6 pg-TEQ/m3 or less.
Nitrogen dioxide (NO 2) One-hour mean value for a day should be within 0.04-0.06 ppm or less.
Photochemical oxidants (Ox) One-hour value should be 0.06 ppm or less.
Benzene Mean value for a year should be 0.003 mg/m3 or less.
Trichloroethylene Mean value for a year should be 0.2 mg/m3 or less.
Tetrachloroethylene Mean value for a year should be 0.2 mg/m3 or less.
Dichloromethane Mean value for a year should be 0.15 mg/m3 or less.
(Notes)
1. “pg” is abbreviation of picogram, or one trillionth of a gram.
2. TEQ is a dioxin toxic equivalent, calculated by looking at all toxic dioxins and measuring them in terms of the most toxic form of dioxin, 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin.
