Accessing Hinohara and Akiruno

You can access the Hinohara and Akiruno area from central Tokyo by train via the JR Chuo and Itsukaichi lines. It takes about 60 minutes from Shinjuku.
To reach the area by car from Shinjuku, take the Shuto Expressway Route 4, and then take the Chuo Expressway to Hachioji Junction. From Hachioji Junction, take the Ken-O Expressway. It takes about 60 minutes.
To reach Mt. Mito in the Hinohara area, you can take the bus from JR Musashi Itsukaichi Station. Take a bus bound for Kazuma, and get off at the Kazuma bus stop. From Kazuma, take the free shuttle bus and get off at the Tomin no Mori bus stop. (Note that this bus service does not operate in the winter.) To climb Mt. Mito via Mitoodaki Falls (the Buna no Ji trail), it takes about one hour and 55 minutes to reach the summit, and 1 hour and 30 minutes to return to the foot of the mountain.
To reach Akigawa Gorge in the Akiruno Area, take a bus bound for Kami-Yozawa and get off at the Nishi-Tokura bus stop. The bus ride takes about 8 minutes, and the gorge is about a 3-minute walk from the bus stop.
