Oshima Park

Oshima Park is located on the island of Oshima, which is part of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. Oshima Park leverages Oshima's unique natural environment, such as majestic landscapes, coastlines, and evergreen forests befitting a national park.
The park is divided into two areas: the Oshima Park area (a zoo, a camellia garden, etc.) where you can just stop by, as well as the Goze River area (Umi no Furusato Mura) where you can stay for a longer period of time. You can reach the park on foot via the Gyoja-kaigan Tunnel.

Coastal Trail

This hiking trail is about 5.5 kilometers in total and takes about 3 hours to walk in full. The trail follows the coastline and then heads towards a pine forest with splendid views.
You can gaze out at the blue sea and wild reefs, and observe the seaside plant community (Juniperus lutchuensis, Japanese cheesewood, Rhaphiolepis umbellata, etc.). The pine forest located a little ways up the trail was rated in the top 100 of Japan's "white sandy beaches with green pine trees," and part of the seaside plant community has been designated a national natural monument.

Recommended Spots along the Coastal Trail

As you walk the coastal trail, you can observer various plant communities and animals, and even encounter the remains of historic landmarks.

  • Sakurakkabu (Large cherry tree)
This ancient, large Oshima cherry tree has been designated a national natural monument. The tree is said to be more than 800 years old and is 14 meters (about 46 feet) tall. Its trunk has a circumference of 8 meters (over 26 feet). The tree's branches span a great area, such that some branches even touch the ground and have begun to sprout roots—almost as if the tree was being divided for replanting, which is how the tree got its name "Sakurakkabu." Having survived the fires of multiple volcano eruptions, the tree continues to bear countless blossoms in late March of each year.
  • Castanopsis sieboldii forest
This is an old-growth forest located right above the camellia garden, and also the forest of most exponential growth on Oshima.

  • Kasamatsu
The seaside plant community (kaihin-shokubutsu-gunraku) in Kasamatsu was designated a national natural monument in 1951. In this plant community, Juniperus lutchuensis covers an area stretching 20 meters inland from the shore. In the same area, seaside plants such as Lilium maculatum and Chrysanthemum pacificum grow as well.
  • Shiofuki
Designated a prefectural natural monument, shiofuki describes the phenomenon where waves surging into a cave causes the air in the cave to condense and, as a result, causes seawater to spew through a hole at the top of the cave.
